Height, weight, BMI, and blood pressure recorded on growth curve. Yearly vision screenings. Scoliosis screening of back. Discussion of physical changes and maturation. Oral health including brushing, flossing, mouth guard use for sports.
Immunizations due
Flu vaccine during fall season (if due).
Doses follow the current AAP and CDC schedule — ask us anything about them at the visit.
Screenings
Vision screenings yearly. TB surveillance, anemia surveillance, lipid profile testing (completed once between 9-11 years).
Safety at this age
Car safety, safety during sports activities, water safety, sun protection, knowing child's friends and families. Maintain smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and escape routes. Avoid smoking around child. Be safe around pets, trampolines, and swimming pools with proper safety equipment. Remove or securely store weapons and firearms. Keep Poison Control 1-800-222-1222 accessible.
Guidance for this age
Development and school: "Adapting to school and schoolwork is an important development at this age. Preferences for certain subjects becomes apparent." Provider reviews school performance and development. Sports physical forms completed if child participates in sports. Behavior and mental health: Mental health concerns addressed with learning concerns. Discuss bullying awareness - "Peers are becoming very important. Bullying starts/ parents need to be aware of the s/s of bullying." Praise accomplishments. Help child express feelings. Encourage free play. Screen time: "Make sure to use parental controls on streaming websites, computers and keep them in family areas. Monitor computer/phone use daily." Puberty: "Physical changes that will occur as your child matures should be discussed. There are a lot of questions regarding sexuality and puberty. Honest answers from the parent are needed to help form healthy attitudes."
Feeding
Offer varied healthy foods including vegetables, fruits, lean proteins. Help child choose healthy foods; offer family meals and encourage breakfast eating. Limit sugar intake. Engage in 60 minutes daily physical activity minimum. Avoid fast foods, fried foods, and fatty foods for healthy cholesterol/triglyceride development.
