Weight, length, head circumference plotted on growth curve. Complete physical exam by provider. Maternal depression screening.
Immunizations due
First immunization series: DTaP/IPV/Hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar #1), oral Rotavirus #1. RSV immunization discussed with provider.
Doses follow the current AAP and CDC schedule — ask us anything about them at the visit.
Screenings
Maternal depression screening; post-partum depression assessment.
Safety at this age
Car seat: properly installed, rear-facing, back seat only. Never leave baby unsupervised in car, on bed, in tub, or near water. "BACK TO SLEEP is the motto of all of the healthcare providers at St. Rose Pediatrics." Keep home and car smoke-free. Small objects and plastic bags: keep away from baby. Avoid cooking while holding baby to prevent burns.
Guidance for this age
Development: Responsive smiling; cooing sounds indicating happiness or upset. Motor skills: Head lifting during tummy time; head control in sitting position. Hand development: Opening and closing hands; bringing hands together. Family dynamics: Blend family time with baby and siblings; take couple time; discuss child care arrangements and returning to work feelings. Tummy time: "very important" for physical development; baby may reach for toys during tummy time. Hygiene practices: Frequent hand washing; avoid crowds with baby.
Feeding
Breast or bottle-formula only for first 4-6 months. Baby indicates hunger through sucking, rooting, putting hands to mouth, making noise. Bottle care: adequately clean and dry bottles/nipples. Never prop bottle; holding baby provides bonding opportunity. Breastfeeding mothers: continue prenatal vitamins, maintain good nutrition, increase water intake for milk production.
