Immunizations due
No immunizations due at 1 month visit. Hepatitis B catch-up available if desired. RSV immunization discussed with provider.
Doses follow the current AAP and CDC schedule — ask us anything about them at the visit.
Screenings
Maternal depression screening.
Safety at this age
Car seat: properly installed, rear-facing, back seat only. Never leave baby unsupervised in car, on bed, or near water. Learn infant CPR/first aid; know emergency numbers; create emergency plan. Home safety: assess for pesticides, firearms/weapons, alcohol/drugs. Smoking: "don't smoke around the baby. Inhaling the carcinogens that escape through smoking can be harmful." Hygiene: wash hands frequently; avoid crowds due to immature immune system.
Guidance for this age
Development: "periods of being awake are good for socialization, motor skills, listening skills, and interaction with you are part of the bonding process." Infant behavior: More wakefulness periods; consider pacifier if fussy; avoid overfeeding during fussy times; soothing motions help. Tummy time: "5-10 minutes a few times/day at first." Sleep positioning: "BACK TO SLEEP is the motto." Parental wellness: Discuss postpartum blues; both parents may feel overwhelmed.
Feeding
Breast milk or formula (parent's choice) recommended. Breastfeeding: on demand, typically every 2-3 hours, 5-10 minutes per side; assess adequacy by monitoring growth and 6-8 diapers daily; watch for food intolerances affecting baby. Bottle feeding: ensure correct formula mixing; hold baby during feedings, never prop bottle. Vitamin D: babies are fed on demand and supplement with 400 IU daily if breastfeeding.
