Weight, length, and head circumference plotted on growth curve. Complete physical exam. Maternal depression screening. Oral health assessment (clean new teeth twice daily with soft cloth or baby toothbrush and tiny fluoride toothpaste dab).
Immunizations due
DTaP, Hib, IPV, Prevnar #3, Rotavirus #3, Influenza vaccine (during flu season).
Doses follow the current AAP and CDC schedule — ask us anything about them at the visit.
Screenings
Post Partum Depression Assessment. TB Surveillance. Lead Surveillance. Oral Health Surveillance. Fluoride Varnish.
Safety at this age
Properly installed rear-facing car seat in back seat only; keep small objects and plastic bags away; don't cook while holding baby; never leave unattended in car, bed, tub, or near water; back sleeping position recommended; keep home and car smoke-free; full safety hazard sweep as baby prepares mobility; walkers not recommended; padded floor area for exploration.
Guidance for this age
Development: Looks when name called, smiles at mirror reflection, babbles with sounds like "ga," "ma," "da," "ba." Gross motor: Rolls back to stomach, sits briefly without support. Fine motor: Passes toy hand to hand, rakes small objects with four fingers. Social: Continue family time blending baby with siblings; take couple time; use upright high chair for family meals; baby enjoys singing, rhymes, interactive games like "itsy bitsy spider"; discuss fluoridated water (city/rural water is fluoridated; well water should be tested).
Feeding
Continue breast or bottle feeding; breastfeeding babies continue vitamin D supplementation; baby may be ready for solids - offer single-ingredient foods one per week (iron-rich baby cereals and vegetables best starting points) to identify reactions; never prop bottle; don't put baby in crib with bottle as this harms emerging teeth; discuss solid food introduction with provider.
