What we’ll check

Height, weight, and blood pressure measured and plotted on growth curves. Physical development monitored. Informal vision and hearing checks during examination.

Immunizations due

At age 3, no immunizations are due except flu shot in fall. At age 4, preschool immunizations are given: DTAP/IPV booster, MMR booster, and Varicella booster. A shot record should be requested for school enrollment.

Doses follow the current AAP and CDC schedule — ask us anything about them at the visit.

Screenings

No formal screenings at ages 3-4. Informal visual and hearing checks during exam. Dental visits every six months are recommended by AAP.

Safety at this age

Use car seat properly installed and checked per manufacturer specifications and Nevada Department of Public Safety guidelines for front-facing seats. Maintain functional smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and emergency escape routes. Teach "stranger danger" awareness and supervise outdoor play. Use sunscreen and helmets for riding toys. Ensure pet safety and swimming pool/trampoline safety. Remove firearms from home or secure very securely away from child. Keep Poison Control number 1-800-222-1222 available.

Guidance for this age

Development: "Mostly potty trained; can dress self and eats independently; uses imagination and understands cooperation and sharing." Language becomes understandable to strangers; child tells stories from books using pictures and memory. Gross motor skills include pedaling tricycles, jumping, and skipping. Fine motor development progresses to drawing circles and simple people figures. Behavior/discipline: School readiness is important. Encourage play with age-appropriate toys and interactive games with peers. Praise good behavior and accomplishments. Help child express feelings and encourage free play. Sleep: Some children give up naptimes during these ages; quiet time daily remains encouraged when possible. Screen time: "Avoid using social media, computers, IPads unless special circumstances. You are the best teacher!"

Feeding

Offer variety of healthy foods including vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins. Provide 12-18 ounces of low-fat milk divided between meals and snacks. Water intake becomes more important. Limit juice to 4 ounces daily mixed with water if given at all; juice is not necessary. Avoid fast foods, fried foods, and fatty foods to support healthy cholesterol and triglyceride development.
