Safety at this age
Rear-facing car seat in back seat only, properly installed. Never leave baby unattended in car, on bed, or near water. Back sleeping position recommended. No smoking near baby; smokers must change shirts and wash hands before handling. Never hit or shake baby; safe crib placement if needing break. Create emergency preparedness plan. Frequent handwashing; avoid crowds with immature infant immune system.
Guidance for this age
Development: Awake periods promote socialization and bonding. Household schedule: Developing routine acceptable; sleep when baby sleeps; maintain nutrition and hydration. Parental mood: Persistent sadness beyond several days warrants professional support; both parents may feel overwhelmed; share feelings with partner. Sibling care: Dedicate one-on-one time with other children.
Feeding
Breastmilk or formula supported (parent choice). Breastfed babies fed on demand, typically every 2-3 hours for 5-10 minutes per side. Adequate intake confirmed by weight gain and 6-8 diapers daily. Monitor maternal diet for intolerances affecting baby. Formula must be mixed correctly; offer 2-3 ounces every 2-3 hours with burping. Never prop bottles; holding baby provides bonding opportunity.
