Weight, length, and head circumference recorded on growth curve. Complete physical exam. Screening for lead exposure and autism via MCHAT form. Informal visual and hearing checks. Oral health evaluation.
Immunizations due
Hepatitis B, Influenza vaccine (during flu season).
Doses follow the current AAP and CDC schedule — ask us anything about them at the visit.
Screenings
TB surveillance, anemia surveillance, lead surveillance, oral health surveillance, fluoride varnish application. Autism screening via MCHAT form.
Safety at this age
Properly installed, rear-facing car seat in back seat only per manufacturer guidelines; install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers with planned escape routes; never leave unattended; water safety with supervision; sunscreen and heat protection; monitor pet interactions; keep firearms and weapons secured or removed; Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Guidance for this age
Offer limited choices between two items; use simple, concrete language and firm corrective tone; remove from volatile situations; establish routines for household calm; continue one nap daily with approximately 12 hours nighttime sleep; avoid social media, computers, and iPads except when necessary; encourage interactive activities; plan ahead for difficult situations; maintain consistent discipline; assess toilet-training readiness (dry for 2+ hours, knows wet/dry, can pull pants up/down, indicates bowel movements).
Feeding
Provide 16-20 ounces milk with one large meal and several small meals/snacks daily; avoid juice or limit to 4 ounces daily mixed with water; offer variety of healthy foods including vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins; expose toddler to new foods multiple times before expecting acceptance; avoid fast foods, fried foods, and fatty foods; never prop bottles; hold child during feeding.
