Length, weight, and head circumference plotted on growth curve. First dental visit around age 1 recommended.
Immunizations due
MMR#1, Varicella#1, Hepatitis A#1, Influenza vaccine (during flu season). RSV immunization discussed as option.
Doses follow the current AAP and CDC schedule — ask us anything about them at the visit.
Screenings
No formal screenings required at 12 months. Hemoglobin check possible if missed at 9 months.
Safety at this age
Rear-facing car seat properly installed. Keep small objects and plastic bags away from baby. Never leave unattended without supervision. Consider swimming pool safety and water safety classes. Use sunscreen and keep baby in shade. Monitor baby-pet interactions. Remove or securely store all firearms. Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Guidance for this age
Development: Looks for hidden objects, imitates gestures, uses "dada" and "mama" specifically, knows one additional word, follows simple directions, sits well, may take first independent steps. Routines: Establishing bedtime routines improves sleep; baby may prefer one nap daily and sleep approximately 12 hours nightly. Media: Avoid social media, computers, iPads for learning; parents are best teachers.
Feeding
"Continue breast or bottle feeding. Solids and meals are priority." Baby will prefer self-feeding; ensure nutritious foods, not empty calories. Encourage sippy cup for water. Think about weaning comfort level. Never prop bottle; holding baby provides bonding opportunity. Don't put baby in crib with bottle to prevent tooth damage.
