Post Partum Depression Assessment. Anemia Surveillance.
Safety at this age
Properly installed rear-facing car seat in back seat only; keep small objects and plastic bags away; don't cook while holding baby; never leave unattended in car, bed, tub, or near water; back sleeping position recommended; keep home and car smoke-free; full safety hazard sweep as baby becomes mobile; walkers not recommended; padded floor area for exploration.
Guidance for this age
Development: Baby laughs out loud, looks to caregivers when upset, makes many noises. Gross motor: Supports self on elbows/wrists when on stomach, rolls from stomach to back. Fine motor: Keeps hands open, grasps seen objects. Social: Continue blending family time with baby and siblings; take couple time; choose quality childcare; tummy time remains important.
Feeding
Breast or bottle-formula only for first 4-6 months; baby shows hunger cues through sucking and rooting; adequately clean and dry bottles/nipples; never prop bottle; holding baby during feeding provides bonding opportunity; can start simple solid foods after 4-6 months (discuss with provider); breastfeeding babies should receive 400 IU vitamin D supplement daily; consider iron supplementation.
