Common questions
What is a sports physical?
Every child or teen who wants to play in a sport or engage in other school activities like cheerleading must have a sports physical, or preparticipation physical examination. They also need clearance after an injury or illness during a season. The exam ensures safe participation and can identify treatable problems before activities begin.
Why is a child's medical history important?
The medical history form gathers information about chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy; hospitalizations or surgeries; past injuries including concussions, sprains and fractures; exercise-related symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain and breathing difficulties; medications and supplements; allergies; and family history of serious illnesses. This history helps the doctor determine if a sport might aggravate an existing condition.
How is a sports physical different from an annual checkup?
Sports physicals focus on musculoskeletal health, assessing bones, muscles, and joints for flexibility, strength, and signs of overuse injuries or stress. They examine previous injuries such as fractures, sprains, concussions and skin infections, and chronic conditions that could reappear during sports. Asthma is one example where accommodation may be needed but participation remains possible.
